Superhero, mom, and fierce feminist, Scarlett Johansson, is fed up. There's still a ton of shaming and labeling in our society when it comes to women talking about sex. We're shamed for liking it, we're shamed for not liking it, and we're shamed for simply talking about sex freely. It's ridiculous, and Johansson is just not having it.
Scarlett Johansson, the 32-year-old mega movie star, is known for straight up telling it like it is. And when it comes to women's health, sexuality, and all around rights, she refuses to keep quiet. She used her outlet as the July cover girl for Cosmopolitan to speak up about the issues that she's passionate about.
From her perspective, regardless of the sex-positive moment mainstream culture is having right now—with tons of companies and products dedicated specifically to lady parts—sex-shaming and slut-shaming are still domineering society.
In Johansson's words:
"When women talk about enjoying sex, it’s almost forbidden. Just having a healthy sexual attitude, you are labeled as loose, wild, a slut. You have no morals, and you’re seen as some kind of sexual deviant or someone who can’t be in a monogamous relationship. The minute you talk about enjoying yourself, being curious, that is still taboo."
Another thing she's passionate about? Women's healthcare.
Johansson is a long-time public supporter of Planned Parenthood, and giving women access to all the healthcare services the organization provides. She doesn't care about the stigma around it and isn't afraid to put her career on the line to defend the nonprofit, which is incredibly admirable.
"There’s no reason we shouldn’t be talking about our reproductive rights. They’re something we have to fight for and continue to protect. There’s nothing icky about talking about that stuff. Of course, it’s private and it’s your body, but we should take the stigma away."
She spoke in depth about her personal experience growing up with Planned Parenthood at the Women's March and in another Cosmo interview last year—specifically, about how it provided a safe place for her and her friends at a young age.
Johansson is a role model for women, speaking up about the issues many big-time movie stars choose to stay quiet about.
On behalf of women everywhere, thank you Scarlett! Here's to more feminist rants, advocating for women's healthcare, and talking freely about sex whenever we want!
