7 Whack Diets You Should NEVER Try

We all have stubborn pounds we're dying to lose. But there are people out there who are literally dying by resorting to ridiculous fad diets. We can't really blame them. These diets are perpetuated by a lot of Hollywood celebrities and the media. Let's face it, who wouldn't want to look like the people you see on TV? 

These fad diets or so called "miracle" weight loss strategies are not only extreme, but they are very much detrimental to your health. Here are some whack diets you should never try. Ever.

Cotton Ball Diet

Believe it or not, a lot of people have succumbed to this trend. It is a fad diet that was born in the Internet. You can see it on YouTube videos, online forums, and of course, on Facebook. With this insane diet, you're supposed to soak a cotton ball in orange juice and swallow it whole. Not only does consuming cotton balls instead of food deprive your body of its much needed nutrients, you can also block your intestines. Moreover, most cotton balls you can buy at drugstores aren't even made of cotton. They're usually made of bleached, synthetic fibers.

Baby Food Diet

Some adults think that if babies can survive on squashed things like baby food, they also most certainly can. Ehem, Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. But newsflash: you're not a baby. Baby food jars have 20-100 calories. Dieters restrict themselves to 600 calories per day, which calls for meal replacements of baby food jars. Besides the obvious lack of calories this diet gives you, you will also be lacking of your fiber. Having low fiber will then lead to constipation, nausea, fatigue, and even weight gain. Talk about being counterproductive.

Cigarette Diet

This fad diet has been existing ever since the 1920s, when the cigarette brand Lucky Strike released ads that advertised their products as appetite suppressors. The big idea was to "Reach for a Lucky instead of a sweet", which obviously promotes smoking rather than eating food. It then became common knowledge that nicotine could help you shed some pounds, so a lot of people, especially women, started smoking cigarettes because of this very purpose. While it is true than nicotine can help you lose weight by reducing your appetite, it can also mess up your lungs, teeth, jaw, and overall health. The long-term effects of this diet is just not worth it.

Black Swan Diet

Remember the film Black Swan, the movie where Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis acted as ballerinas? Natalie even won an Oscar for it. Yup, that one. Mila Kunis, who had to take the role of Lily in the film, revealed that in addition to her ballet training, she also had to lose weight to she could look the part. She said she had to eat only 1200 calories per day, and smoked a lot of cigarettes. In the end, she ended up weighing only 95 pounds (she's 5 feet 4 inches tall). Natalie Portman had a similar diet, according to a dance with ties to the actress. She barely ate - sometimes consuming just grapes for breakfast and dinner. Plus, she had to work/train for 16 hours a day. Natalie revealed that she felt so skeletal that there were nights she thought she's going to die. So there you go.

Master Cleanse Diet

You've probably already heard of this, as a lot of celebrities swear by this fad diet. The Master Cleanse Diet is also referred to as the Lemonade Diet or the Maple Syrup Diet. This diet has been around for so long that it has now tons of variations. But they all have one thing in common: a strange mixture of lemon, maple syrup, water and cayenne pepper. And you have to drink it for 10 straight days as replacement of food. Beyonce reportedly lost 20 pounds because of this diet, in preparation for Dream Girls, thus bringing this ridiculous diet back into the spotlight. With the Master Cleanse, you're just basically drinking diuretics and all you're going to shed is water weight. If you decide to do this, you'll be depriving your body of essential calories and nutrients, and you will also experience side effects like fatigue, nausea, dizziness and dehydration. You will also most likely lose some muscle.

Sleeping Beauty Diet

This diet is absurd as it is simple. If you're asleep, you're not eating. And if you're not eating, you will lose weight. This diet takes the whole idea into extremes that it encourages people to take sedatives in order to fall and stay asleep for days on end. It is rumored that Elvis Presley followed this insane diet. But you know what? Sleeping for days starves your body and causes muscle deterioration because of lack of movement. It also risks death. So the next time you think about doing this, think about the possibility that you might not wake up at all.

Blood Type Diet

The Blood Type Diet is based on the belief that the food you intake chemically reacts with your blood type. Developed by naturopathic physician Peter D’Adamo, the diet suggests that everyone can follow an optimal diet plan according to their blood type. For example, if you're a type O, you should eat lean meats, poultry and fish, but refrain from consuming grains and legumes. It all sounds scientific, but in reality, there is no solid evidence that your blood type affects weight loss. It can also be very restrictive depending on your blood type.
