I've always been a gym rat, but my idea of working out never involved other people.

I'd wake up, go to the gym, interact with no one, and then leave. It wasn't until recently that I experimented with group exercise classes ‚ and it wasn't even on purpose! One day, I was running on the treadmill (minding my own business) and this fit as hell woman came up to me and asked if I thought I was getting a good workout.

When I replied "yes," she told me I was wrong and that to get a good workout, I needed to take her Body Pump class. I thought her presence was aggressive, but at the same time, I appreciated her confidence. I took her group exercise class and it was amazing. Now, I'm all for group exercise classes. They're my go-to.

That said, there are some pretty specific personalities in group exercise classes that I find both annoying and fun. Honestly, there are some specific personalities in gyms in general, but I'll save that for another article.

If you've ever taken a group exercise class, you'll be able to relate to these 10 different personalities you run into EVERY time you take one.

The Dolled Up Beauty Queen

There's always one or two women in the class with a full face of makeup on. I typically go to the early classes, which is why I'm always so shocked by how put together these ladies are. How early did they have to wake up in order to be beautified by our 8 a.m. class? Also, who are they trying to impress, because there's no way they ACTUALLY think sweating with makeup on is a good idea. That's how adult acne happens!

The Groaning Gent

The Groaning Gent

The Groaning Gent is typically always a guy (hence the word, "gent"). He's the dude who groans every time he does anything in the class. He groans when he works his biceps, he groans when he does jumping jacks, and he groans when he drinks his blue Gatorade. This kid is never not groaning and he's only doing it to prove to us, and himself, that he's totally a gym buff. Message received.

The Poorly Dressed One

The Poorly Dressed One

I am always so surprised when someone comes to the gym in non-workout clothes. It's one thing not to wear the latest Lululemon leggings but jeans and converse? C'mon! I always see a couple of randoms rolling around wearing sandals, slacks, and some sort of inappropriate shoe. That's got to be a safety hazard, right?

The Newbie

She's the one who's never been to class before. She has no idea what she's doing and she sticks out like a sore thumb. Funny thing about her, though, she's going to give it her best! Even though she's new to the game, she's not going to let it show.

The Overconfident Lady

The Overconfident Lady

She's been to class before. But for whatever reason, something is going on in her life where she feels the need to overcompensate and put too much weight on her bar (or, too much energy into her flow). Whatever the class is, she decides to overextend herself which leads to her looking completely exhausted and maybe even passing out mid-session.

I was once in a group exercise class where two friends took turns snapping pictures of themselves in between — and during — reps. It was absolutely ridiculous (and I'm someone who's all about taking pictures of myself and others in cute workout clothes). At least wait until the class is over to snap some gym pics; we don't need to see you using a 5 pound weight as an accessory.

The Screamer

The Screamer

Why are they screaming? Who the hell knows! I'm always disgusted whenever I hear someone screaming in a workout class. Are they in pain? Dead? What? Are we, as third-party outsiders, supposed to help them?

Unless you're in agony, please stop screaming just because you're "feeling the energy" in the exercise class. Chill.

The Searching For Friends Enthusiast

The Searching For Friends Enthusiast

I always hear people say they met their friends or boyfriends at the gym. The Searching For Friends Enthusiast comes to the gym to meet people. He or she is usually involved in a gym clique and that clique is obvious in exercise classes, because they all sit/work out near each other and they act like they're the coolest kids on campus.

The One Who Doesn't Put Any Effort In

There's usually only one of these cats in a class. Whether they just stumbled in, or they actually meant to be there, they don't work very hard. They barely try and they're the first out the door when the class is over. Why are they there? I don't really know. It could be because they feel like they need to lose a few pounds, but they aren't willing to put in the work. Or, they know they're the perfect weight and therefore, don't have to try. Honestly, it could be ANYTHING. I still don't get these people.

The Coffee Drinker

The Coffee Drinker

I can't even count how many people I see at the gym and in class drinking coffee instead of water. I don't get it! I know caffeine gives you energy and can even assist in burning calories, but coffee dehydrates you. How can you drink something so dehydrating while sweating your body weight out in a bootcamp class?
