The moment Orange is the New Black hit Netflix in 2013, we all fell in love with Piper and Alex's relationship. However, their story, which is loosely based on Piper Kerman's book of the same name, isn't as accurate as you'd expect.
In the award-winning series, we only get Kerman's perspective mixed in with exaggeration from Netflix's side. But now, the real-life Alex Vause is trying to set the record straight.
Catherine Cleary Wolters, a.k.a. the "real Alex Vause" opened up about her relationship with Kerman in an interview with Vanity Fair. And despite all of the steamy sex scenes we get in OITNB, Wolters claims the duo never actually had sex in prison. In fact, they only were in the same facility for five weeks.
“We made some mean dinners together, though, out of cans of cheese, corn chips, and chili, and Piper learned how to communicate effectively through a toilet," said Wolters. "A little something you’ll never pick up at Smith.”
While Kerman only spent 13 months in prison, Wolters served 20 years for her involvement in a drug ring. However, Wolters wants to make one thing clear: Piper was aware of her choices, has been with women before and was never "seduced" by Alex, as the series portrays.
“When we were traveling together I started developing a crush on her. And eventually, that turned into a crazy mad love affair,” Wolters continues. “But that was after she had already done the deed that made her complicit. We weren't girlfriends. We were friends with benefits. I was not the older sexy, glamorous lesbian who snatched her from her pristine Smith College cradle."
Either way, Wolters still manages to enjoy the show. After all, it is entertainment!
